Polar bears and people persist in Churchill. Innovative scientific breakthroughs are making is safe to do so.
04 | Summary
Churchill, aptly dubbed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” offers an unparalleled and increasingly complex intersection of human settlement and the wild existence of Ursus maritimus. Each autumn, hundreds of polar bears congregate near this remote Hudson Bay town, awaiting the freeze-up of the bay’s ice, their primary hunting ground. This unique seasonal convergence creates an extraordinary opportunity for wildlife tourism and research, but also presents significant challenges. Residents have developed innovative strategies for coexistence, from bear-deterrent programs and public safety initiatives like the “Polar Bear Alert Program” to the “Polar Bear Holding Facility” for temporary detainment. On Halloween eve, patrol cars even form a perimeter around the town so the kids can trick-or-treat.
The narrative in Churchill is one of delicate balance: a community deeply connected to its ursine neighbours, striving to protect both human life and an iconic species facing the impacts of a rapidly changing climate. This dynamic makes Churchill a vital crucible for understanding human-wildlife coexistence in a warming Arctic.

• I have a standing invitation to collaborate with Polar Bears International who hosted me for my previous expeditions to Churchill and have provided exclusive access to the polar bears
• It will be important to also work in Wapusk National Park to document the new born cubs; I have exclusive access via guides to this location too
